Principal’s Assembly Message 23 March 2026

Last week…”How we deal with disappointment”

Resilience vs Balance

If there is one thing we can say about young people in South Africa, it is this: you are resilient!

You wake up early. You train hard. You travel long distances to school and for matches. You juggle academics, sport, culture, leadership…and still find a way to show up the next day and do it all over again.

That’s NOT normal everywhere in the world. That is South African tough. Proudly South African.

Our rugby players take hits…and get back up.

A High performance centre is designed for ONE thing: Maximum output in ONE area. EVERYTHING revolves around performance – training schedules, recovery, nutrition, time, focus…etc.

Because resilience is powerful – but unbalanced resilience can become harmful. We breakdown, we crack, we hurt ouerselves and others around us.

NOW the danger of this message is that those who should look for balance don’t…and those who actually need to step up, see this as an excuse to do even less. But for those who are already going over and beyond for the school and yourself…this one is for you!

Sometimes the strongest thing you can do is not pushing harder…but choosing wisely.

  • If your sport is thriving, but your academics are collapsing – that’s not success.

Balance is NOT weakness

Balance is maturity.

Even in scripture, we are reminded of this principle in Ecclesiastes 3:1 “To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under the heaven”

As a school, we celebrate your resilience. We are VERY PROUD of it…but we also want to guide you:

  • To prioritise well
  • To manage your commitments
  • To communicate when you are overwhelmed
  • To choose excellence over excess

…because the goal is not burn out at 18 or even earlier. The goal is to build a life that lasts.

So here is the challenge:

Be resilient – but be wise

Be committed – but be balanced

Be driven – but stay grounded

Because WHO you are becoming, matters WAY MORE than what you are doing.

PRAYER

Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for being part of a school and a community and that we can have a positive influence on those around us. Guide us to strike a healthy balance between resilience and rest.

Help us to stay committed to what we are supposed to do and find the joy in what is on offer.

AMEN
