The drama department is a vibrant component of the school.
Learners can take Drama as a component of the subject Creative Arts in Grades 8 & 9 and can continue with Dramatic Arts in grades 10-12.
Learners who take the subject visit the theatre and attend workshops on a regular basis.
Every year the gr 10-12 learners attend Die Woordfeesin Stellenbosch.
The second SIT ( Schools inter-Theatre) competition took place this year. The different inter-house colour groups competed against each other. Each house has to produce their own play. This year the Blue team won with their production called Cultural Blues.
Hermanus also won the SIT competition against Bredasorp High school
The Drama department produces a play every year and it is a highlight for the senior Drama students as it creates a feeling of camaraderie among the learners. Last year Pigcasso, a comic sketch about the nature of art, was performed. The learners also participate in the Shakespeare Schools Festival and the 2020 production will be "A Midsummer's African Dream".
In 2017 the Drama department was invited to produce a play for the annual Kalfiefees held in the De Wet Hall in Onrus River. Drought was workshopped and performed by the Grade 12 drama students. Kyknet recorded parts of the show and interviewed learners for a segment of the programme Fiesta.
Students also take part in The Overberg Eisteddfod. In 2016 and 2017 learners from Hermanus High School have been the overall winners in the English Eisteddfod for Speech and Drama. This year the eisteddfod occured in the 3rd term and two of our learners received medals in the English and Afrikaans section.
The ATKV Tienertoneel competition is held in August. In 2018 Die see en die maan baklei weer vanaand – written by Louis Roux ,was performed, and in 2019 Swem, Sunflower Swem! - written by Dayne Nel
Every two or three years the school performs a large scale musical and the 2019 production was Hairspray w, where over 70 learners participated.
