BULLETIN

END OF TERM MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

The biggest event of the third term is always the Inter-schools. This year certainly did not disappoint. Not only was this year’s Inter-schools an extremely thrilling and successful day but it was also a historical event. After 25 years of competing against Hoërskool Overberg in the Inter-schools, this was our final Inter-schools fixture against them. Both on and off the sports field our pupils made the school and the community of Hermanus extremely proud. The pride and character shown by all of our players on the field was fantastic, while the spirit off the field was just as impressive.

Apart from Inter-schools, there have been a large number of significant highlights during the course of the term. These range from Eisteddfods to dance competitions, from Olympiads to the Science Expos, from spelling competitions to public speaking competitions, from choir performances to the ATKV Tienertoneel and the list goes on.

The biggest highlight for me, however, is not the performance of any team or pupil representing the school ; The biggest highlight for me comes from an individual of this school for her selfless service to the community.

Despite having a busy school schedule, Inga Mfundisi still finds the time to coach chess at Lukanyo Primary School. Inga has been coaching chess at this school for the past three years. At the recent Top Chess Tournament, held for the Western Cape Schools, the TWO teams that she coaches: the under 11 and the under 12 teams, both achieved 1st places and gold medals. To see Inga standing on the stage not once but twice, to also receive her gold medals with these teams and wearing her Hermanus High School uniform, is truly an outstanding and noteworthy achievement.

We have spoken a lot this term about the motto “Enter to Learn. Leave to Serve.” What makes this achievement so admirable for me is not the fact that Inga won two gold medals, but rather the difference she is making in the community. I cannot think of a better example of where someone is “serving” in the true sense of the word. On behalf of Hermanus High School, well done and congratulations on the difference you are making, Inga.

Mev.

These awards, as with the many that the school has received over the past several years, once again emphasize the quality of teachers we have at this school. Hermanus High School continues to perform well on a number of different levels and there is so much the school can be proud of. There is no doubt that the quality of education that Hermanus High School offers is a direct result of the committed teachers this school has.

While I am speaking about the staff, I would also like to take this opportunity to bid farewell to one of our teachers. Mr Kotze will be leaving the school today. When Ms Skein resigned at the end of last year, the school had to find a history and music teacher at very short notice. We were indeed fortunate to be able to call on the services of Mr Kotze who had just returned from teaching and working overseas. Not only was Mr Kotze able to fit in as a history and music teacher, but he was also able to take over the choir which Ms Skein had so successfully coached over the past several years. To have been able to call on Mr Kotze at that late stage of the year was truly a blessing and I remain extremely grateful for the fact that he was able to and made himself available to assist at school.

In conclusion, I also thank all the pupils for their continued efforts during the term. As mentioned it has been a long and busy term. Thank you to those who continue to work hard in the classroom and remain committed to the school’s extra-mural activities. You bring value to the school! I wish everyone a restful week off. A week where we can hopefully regain our energy for the final short, but frantic, last term of the year that lies ahead.

INTERACT

Our Hermanus High School Interact Club went to visit their friends at Camphill for some Spring Day fun. They were having fun with the playdough, singing, playing games and not to mention sharing delicious pancakes with their very special friends!

It is always a privilege for our school to be able to spend time with the children at Camphill School.

DRAMA

Drama learners, accompanied by Miss Nel and Mrs Wilson, attended the Cradle of Creativity festival at the Baxter Theater and had the privilege to watch four shows in one day.

SOUP KITCHEN

We would like to say a big thank-you to all the parents who supplied soup and bread to the soup kitchen during the winter months.

WOW Spelfees

MOOT COURT

Hermanus High School is very proud of Keano Hunter and Samuel Cutts who have qualified for the National Moot Court Competition. They are one of four teams who will represent the Western Cape at the National Round in Pretoria during the September Holidays. Justin Inch, former pupil of Hermanus High School and candidate attorney at Vorster & Steyn Attorneys, helped Keanu Hunter, Samuel Cutts, George Botha and Mikka Snyders prepare for the Moot Court Competition. His assistance was invaluable.

MINI SAGA COMPETITION

The Mini Saga Competition is run by our school district for learners of English Home Language and English First Additional Language. The aim is to write a story using exactly 50 words.

Our results were:
Seniors:
Jenna Metcalf (1st)
Keano Hunter and Chante Swart (joint 3rd)

Juniors:
Megan Knott (2nd)
Zachary Fortune and Juliet McFall (joint 3rd).

Jenna's Winning Story:
"He sat with his cape fluttering wildly in the wind. The building was tall and he could see life below him like scuttering ants. Maybe, down there someone needed saving, he thought. Certainly, on this building, someone needed saving. He leapt heroically, but alas, a cape is only a cape."

LOUD

WCED PICTURES OF THE OVERBERG

Saturday, 24 August saw the exhibition and prize giving of the WCED Pictures of the Overberg - Storied.

Grade 8 and 9 learners from several Overberg schools entered. Marie Viljoen received the silver medal, certificate and art gift bag.

Josephine Rose Carr won a gold medal and trophy. Her piece will be going through to the Zeitz Mocca Museum for top candidates on the 5 th October.

The Eistedford also saw some talented artists moving through the ranks. Well known local artist Tertius van Dyk is currently substituting all art classes, and learners are being exposed to the best of surrealism and abstract art.

On the 4 th October the Annual Matric Art Exhibition of Hermanus High School, Northcliff House College and Overberg High School is taking place. It is one of the First Friday art walk stops and will exhibit this year’s Visual Art and Design work of the learners.

HAIR

Boys

All boys are to take careful note of the rules and regulations for hairstyles as indicated in the school’s Code of Conduct.

  • There is a fashion/trend at the moment to have one’s hair cut in the style of a “comb-over”. This style includes cutting one’s hair particularly short on one side and then keeping the hair long on the top with a long fringe. Please take note that this hair style is considered inappropriate and unacceptable by the school and will not be tolerated.
  • Any hairstyle where the hair is particularly short on the sides but longer on the top is unacceptable. One’s hair must “blend in” from top to bottom.
  • No fancy lines or patterns may be cut into the hair or eyebrows.
  • Hair may not be cut so short that the scalp is visible.
  • No learner may have any form of dyed or bleached hair or wear any substances (gel, conditioner, etc.) in their hair.

All hairstyles must be conservative, neat and suit the smart image of the school uniform.

All girls are to ensure that their hair is neat and tidy when they return to school in the new term.

  • Hair must be fastened with hairclips at all times and no loose hair must be noticeable.
  • Hair must be out of the face and eyes.
  • Pony tails must be neat and tidy and in the centre of the back of the head.
  • “Cornrows” and braids (with or without extensions) are allowed, provided they are clean and neat. Cornrows must run parallel to each other from the forehead to the nape of the neck. No patterned cornrows.
  • Every braid must be the same length and be the natural colour of the girl’s hair.
  • Plaits/Braids shorter than collar length must be kept off the face. Longer ones must be tied back.
