 BULLETIN 10 SEPTEMBER 2018

INTERSCHOOLS

More importantly, apart from the sport and results of the Interschools sports fixtures, it is about being part of something special. It does not matter whether you are playing sport on the day or not. In fact, it does not matter if you are a Hermanus High School pupil or not. What really matters is that you are part of something of which you can be proud. During the course of the weekend, I spoke about being part of a community that comes together and that, to me, is ultimately what makes the Interschools so special. It is about the pupils, the staff, the past pupils as well as the parents and even past parents, coming together to celebrate this school and everything we stand for. Win or lose, that is ultimately what makes Interschools so very special.

Trouens, in baie opsigte was hulle selfs belangriker.

One of the many lessons to be learnt from sport is to win with humility and to lose with dignity and it is in this area that the school particularly impressed me. Yes, we would have liked to have won all of our matches. However, the reality in life is that there will always be a winner and there will, unfortunately, always be a loser. The reality is also that one learns far more from losing than from winning. As long as it does not become a habit it is, in fact, healthy to lose. The important thing about losing, is how you lose and what you learn from it in the process.

Perhaps the two events that stand out the most for me at the Interschools are two events where we actually lost. The first was the U/15A Rugby match. Despite the fact that these boys lost their match and were completely disappointed by their result, after the final whistle they picked themselves up, shook hands with the opposition and then stood in a circle with them as they congratulated one another. I have no doubt that this was tough for them but it was sportsmanship at its best.

The fact that we lost a number of matches was obviously disappointing but it is also fine. As a school and as individuals it keeps us “honest” and maintains the desire to do better. It will ensure that we continue to work hard and that we are well-prepared for next year’s Interschools. No-one said Interschools was easy. If it were, it would not be an Interschools!

Vir hierdie redes alleenlik was die Interskole vir my ‘n reusesukses.

Another interesting and impressive factor for me was the discipline both schools displayed on the sports field. Despite the rivalry between the two schools and the toughness of the matches, I did not witness a single incident of ill-discipline. Both schools should be commended on the manner in which they played their matches.

Over and above the performances on the sports field the performance off it is just as important and it is here that I would also like to congratulate all our pupils. Besides the 350 pupils who played sport on that day, I would also like to thank the more than 200 pupils who supported them from the stands.  The entrance of the cheerleaders was excellent and the performance on the stands was brilliant as usual. A big thank you to the cheerleaders for the energy and spirit they brought to the day and thank you to all the learners on the stands for the many hours put in towards their entertaining performance and invaluable support. An Interschool’s event would not be the same or as special without them.

For those of you who were not here, you have unfortunately missed out on something special. Sadly this is both your and the school’s loss. If you were not here, all I can do is continue to urge you to get involved. Your involvement in this school can only benefit both you and us. There is no doubt that if you are not involved, you are continuing to miss out on experiencing the Hermanus High School Magic!

‘n Skool kan slegs suksesvol wees as daar goeie leerders in die skool is. ‘n Skool is slegs ‘n goeie

Chrome books have been issued to all Grade 10 and 11 pupils and tablets to all Grade 8s and 9s. Due to the minimal academic time left with the G12s, they have not been issued with devices. All pupils have to take ownership of their devices and these are taken home on a daily basis. All things considered, the roll-out has gone extremely well.

There were 33 schools with 312 projects participating in the competition.  At least 3 judges had interviews with each of the participants.  We are very proud to announce that 21 learners received medals. We consider each of the learners, who took part, as a winner!

6.  REDENAARS

HERMIES SING PRYSE LOS
