Principal's Assembly Message 17 October 2022

Reading: Ps 42:11

“I will put my hope in God! I will praise Him again – my Saviour and my God!”

Today is the last day that we have our Matrics at our full school assembly. This is quite a milestone, achievement and, for some, quite emotional. I am sure for some, the future and how it is going to play out, is quite daunting. God is the one who has created us, so HE is the one who wrote the owner’s manual as well.

As a last bit of comfort, I would like to read you another promise from the designer of your life from the owner’s manual in Jerimiah 29:11
For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.

Let’s hold on to that as we enter into the home straight of the year for most of us and the end of a 12-year journey for the Matrics.

Prayer:

Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for having the opportunity to be part of this great institution called Hermanus High School. Thank you for having had this great school in mind when you designed and created me many years ago. We want to declare that we are holding on to every promise that you have made and written in my owner’s manual, the Bible. With one week to go for the Matrics and three weeks to go for the rest of the school, please give them the discipline, drive and energy to prepare as well as possible for the upcoming exams and provide them with the hope and peace required to be successful.

Amen.

Vandag vier ons uitnemendheid! In English it is called excellence. The definition of excellence is: the quality of being outstanding or extremely good.

As is the case with most top achievers in any activity…sport, culture, academic achievement…it requires a good mix of talent and work ethic/discipline. There is not much you can do about talent, but work ethic is all up to you and we want to recognise and solute you for all your efforts during the past term.

“There are too many of us, I think, who acquire a piece of paper to frame it and to hang it on a wall. You are celebrating what you knew…in a world where what you knew is becoming increasingly less relevant And so, the question for us is not, “What do we know?” But more importantly, “What are we willing to learn?” In this new era, I want to suggest to you … in the bias for action era, what we are learning is more important than what we know. Hence, what you are willing to learn is often – NOT ALWAYS – more important than what you already know.

If you are strong, be a protector, if you are smart, be a humble influencer and that strength and intelligence will be weapons you won’t wield against the weak.
